MORE LIFE. LESS IMPACT.
A device can have more to give. Choosing pre-owned helps keep useful technology in circulation and can reduce demand for newly manufactured devices.
ILLUSTRATIVE REUSE-IMPACT ESTIMATES
Potential lifecycle emissions avoided under a published smartphone-reuse scenario.
Potential supply-chain water-use reduction under the same benchmark scenario.
Illustrative estimates based on our broader business’s historical reuse volume and a published iPhone 11 benchmark. These are not measured company savings. The scenario assumes each reused device replaces an equivalent new-device lifecycle; actual outcomes may differ substantially.
The 2023 Fraunhofer Austria / refurbed study, sections 11.1.1–11.1.2, compares a new iPhone 11 with a refurbished one. It reports 72 versus 15.7 kg of lifecycle carbon emissions, and 12,075 versus 1,695 liters of modeled water use. The differences are 56.3 kg and 10,380 liters per device in that scenario. We applied those factors to our company-reported historical reuse volume, converted liters to US gallons using 3.785411784 liters per gallon, and rounded the totals.
This is a benchmark extrapolation, not a device-by-device assessment of our operations. It treats the historical volume as iPhone 11-equivalent reuses and assumes equivalent new production is displaced. Actual device mix, replacement rates, repairs, transport, and additional useful life have not been incorporated. The figures refer to our broader business history, not solely Resource Tech sales. Water refers to the study’s modeled supply-chain use, not water metered at our facilities or water physically recovered. These estimates should not be interpreted as verified savings.
Keeping a working device in use extends the value of the materials and manufacturing already invested in it.
Choose a device that fits your needs and care for it. Reuse can reduce impact when it replaces a new purchase.
Protect your device, maintain it, and consider repair when practical. When it can no longer be used, choose a responsible electronics recycling option.
